Located just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, Mombo is considered the most fertile area in the Delta, with its mix of habitats attracting large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators.
The recently-rebuilt Wilderness Safaris flagship camp maintains the integrity of its pristine environment through the use of natural materials, minimal human footprint and 100% solar status. Elevated on wooden decks beneath towering shade trees, Mombo overlooks a floodplain teeming with game. Elegant, expansive guest tents celebrate Mombo traditions while a large deck and plunge pool are ideal vantage points from which to observe the passing wildlife.
Since 2001, Mombo has been the centre of a unique partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana Government in a pioneering rhino conservation programme that has seen healthy breeding populations of both Critically Endangered black rhino and Near Threatened white rhino reintroduced to and living in the Okavango Delta.
Game drives explore the incredible area, yielding all of the wealth of this wildlife-rich area, from herbivore concentrations – especially of red lechwe, plains zebra, giraffe and impala – to one of Africa’s highest density lion populations. Spotted hyaena and leopard are other frequently seen carnivores.
HOW TO GET THERE? Daily flight from Johannesburg to Maun. Daily scheduled flights from Maun into Mombo.
SPECIAL INTEREST: Photographers paradise with a high abundance of big cats and predators. A great place to bird and see the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl.
If we were forced to list our best time, then it would be June, July or August when the flood water is high and it condenses the animals onto the shrinking dry land.
But its also a lot cheaper during the green season and you still won’t leave disappointed.
Mombo on a bad day is the equivalent of many other camps good days!
“Just over a week into my safari and I wonder how I’ve changed, if at all. Certainly the experiences I’ve had and things I’ve seen have shaped me in someway. But then, as if by some ancient, unspeakable memory, I remember… it’s in my blood.”
